A Backyard Beer Garden Built from Stone, Sweat, and Style
Every time I step onto a site where Alex from Inca Stone has left his mark, I know I’m about to witness something remarkable. The man doesn’t just build. He sculpts. He won’t admit it, but I think of him as an artist of stone.

Last time, I photographed a semi-truck built entirely out of stone. That alone would be enough of a legacy for most stonemasons. But this time? I walked into a backyard beer garden so beautiful it looked like it belonged on the cover of a craft brewing magazine or a feature in Better Homes & Gardens.

Nestled behind a private home in Butler, Pennsylvania, this outdoor space was built on the foundation of what appeared to be a century-old stone barn. When Bill, the homeowner, bought the land years ago, he didn’t realize the potential buried beneath the overgrowth. But after uncovering the old structure’s walls, he partnered with Alex to breathe new life into the bones of history.

What remains is something no one else in the country has—an open-air beer garden crafted with heart, history, and precision. Inca Stone built a custom pergola designed to support climbing hops and vines while doubling as a safety feature to protect the slope between the garden and the patio above. Every stone was either original to the site or sourced from local Pennsylvania quarries, including a 2,000-pound bar counter carved from a single slab.

Bill offered me a beer. I told him I don’t drink while working, but I’d gladly take him up on it once we wrapped the shoot.
The only catch? I had made the mistake of telling him I liked every beer, except ciders and IPAs.
He laughed. “Well, the only thing I have on tap is a Hazy IPA.”
I relented and he poured me a perfect glass of a New Trail Broken Heels.

He promised it wouldn’t punch me in the mouth like a cup of summer allergies. And to his credit, it didn’t. It drank more like a smooth wheat beer, lightly tangy, full of flavor, and just the kind of refreshment you hope for after hours of hauling cameras under the July sun.
We were both sweating so much during the shoot that his wife came out with two white towels for us. I wiped down my face and lenses, and finally, after capturing every detail in stills and video, I joined Bill and Alex, took a sip, and we toasted to a job well done.

If you’re a designer, builder, or homeowner who’s poured your heart into an outdoor space like this, something that deserves to be more than a blurry smartphone memory, I’d love to help you tell your project’s story. My photography brings out the craftsmanship, the textures, and the intention behind every stone, beam, and blade of grass.
